‘Since completing chapter 1 of Susan's painting as a practice e-course I have found a love in creating artwork that I had never had before. I particularly loved Susan's no nonsense approach to just getting started where you're at, and keep things (including art supplies) simple. I can't believe how far I have come in such as short space of time, creating artwork every-other day and I'm thrilled to have sold a few pieces of my work which is just fabulous and far exceeded my expectations where I could take my art journey. I'm really looking froward to chapters 2 and 3’

I'm a huge fan of Susan's art and approach to life. I discovered Susan via her podcast and fell in love. Her honest vulnerability and thoughtful sensitivity in dealing with art making also applies a lot to life! I've taken all of her courses and have savoured each class. I love how she shares ideas and techniques openly, but not prescriptively, encouraging you to find your own style. Her content is so encouraging and inspiring, and really fuel for the soul. I would strongly recommend them to any artist, emerging or established!

I have just loved everything about the Course. Being relatively new I enjoyed learning the basics I needed to Practice each time I paint. The recommendations of setup and supplies of products and equipment – I have found this super helpful in setting up my own space. I find this crucial to be able to have a space that’s ready to “GO ”at all times. The product recommendations have also been amazing. I am slowly building my collection of beautiful equipment from brushes to paints. I have also just completed my first Commission piece which I feel if I hadn’t of enrolled in this I wouldn’t have achieved this. I found the Painting as a Practice a lovely time for me. Susan’s voice and presence is so professional and I find her voice just so calming. So sitting listening and learning I have just loved.

I’m Susan Nethercote (she/her) and I am a painter living in Ballarat Australia.
My artwork examines the relationship between the cultivation of flowers and botanicals, and the ways we seek to create a sense of home, place, and spiritual connection through both domestic and public gardens and the broader landscape.
In 1998 I received my degree with honours in Fine Art at the University of Melbourne, where I also lectured and tutored. From 2000 until 2015 I established and ran the independent clothing label ‘Manque Design’.
In addition to maintaining a significant online presence, I sell my artwork globally, license to various lifestyle, fashion, and decor brands worldwide, host the ‘Studio Insider Art’ podcast with over 230,000 listens, teach via online classes here, and create videos on YouTube.
In 2018 I hosted an artists’ retreat in the south of France. My first solo exhibition in 2022, ‘Autumnal Dreamscapes’ was a sell-out success and she have exhibited in numerous group exhibitions. I was the 2022/23 winner of the AGES Society Art Prize. In 2024 I am commencing her MA in Visual Art.
I’m passionate about teaching art to others and I look forward to welcoming you to my classroom.

No, you truly don't. Painting as a practice is very much about starting where you are and getting creative with what you already have. I encourage you to gather together all those supplies you already have (including those that might be hanging out in the kids art cupboard) and begin by using those. You may be clearer on which supplies you choose to invest in throughout the course, which is completely fine.
